I saw the wonderful Reading Habits Book Tag floating all over BookTube and book blogs and thought I would answer the questions myself.
1. Do you have a certain place at home for reading?
I definitely have different places to read depending on the time of day and the time of the year! I usually read on the sofa during the daytime/evening snuggled into a blanket to keep nice and cosy. I will also read in bed before I go to sleep; I try to read for about an hour each night. However, my favourite place to read is outdoors when it’s sunny. For me, nothing beats being in the garden in a floaty summer dress with your sunglasses on reading a great YA book. Unfortunately, England isn’t always the luckiest when it comes to sunshine, so reading outdoors is usually pretty limited.
2. Bookmark or random piece of paper?
Bookmarks! I have a slight obsession with collecting them; I will always buy one when I visit a new place. I love adding to my collection, even if I seem to only use 2 or 3!
3. Can you just stop reading or do you have to stop after a chapter/ a certain amount of pages?
I always have to finish a chapter if I am going to put the book down for a while. I don’t really like to stop reading halfway through a chapter because when I pick it up again I forget where I am or what has happened. If this ends up happening I have to reread the last few pages again and I begin to feel disconnected to the story.
4. Do you eat or drink while reading?
I always have a drink next to me when I’m reading, whether that’s cold (juice) or hot (tea). I don’t usually tend to eat when I read, if I do it will be small nibbles like fruit or crisps.
5. Multitasking: Music or TV while reading?
I actually like to have the TV on in the background when I am reading. If a family member is watching the television and I am reading in the same room I don’t mind at all as long as it isn’t too loud or distracting. Once I get my head into a book and am really invested into the story I am able to block all other noises around me out. I actually prefer having a little background noise when I read as I find it quite comforting. Personally for me, silence can be quite haunting and make me feel uncomfortable after a while (am I crazy?)
6. One book at a time or several at once?
100% one book at a time. I have tried reading multiple books at once and it has just ended in a disaster. When I get excited about new releases I want to start reading them all at the same time, but for me I just get lost. I end up forgetting which characters are in which book and I lose my investment in the stories. I have definitely learnt to read one book at a time and wait until I finish it before I can even think about opening another one!
7. Reading at home or everywhere?
I read everywhere. Although I tend to read mostly at home, I read wherever and whenever I have the chance. I can read in the car and on public transport (unlike my family who all feel ill if they do), which I love. Devouring a book on a long car journey is one of my favourite things to do, I love being snuggled in the backseat with a blanket and reading about an adventure as I am travelling a long distance.
8. Reading out loud or silently in your head?
I always read in my head. I will only every read something out loud if I want to share a quote/passage of the book with them.
9. Do you read ahead or even skip pages?
I never tend to skip any parts of a book, because for me I worry I will miss vital parts of the book which will ruin the reading experience. Occasionally, if I really am not enjoying a book, I will begin to skim pages to finish it quicker. I never DNF (do not finish) books, so sometimes skimming a boring book is a must in order for me to keep sane and get to the end!
10. Breaking the spine or keeping it like new?
As much as I love the look of fresh new, unbroken spines of books, I tend to break mine when I read them. I find it difficult to read comfortably if I have to hold the book in a position so the spine does not crack.
11. Do you write in your books?
I never write in my books. If I love a page or a quote I may tab it with a post-it-note, but I will never write words or highlight pages. This is because I sometimes lend my books out to other people and I wouldn’t like to receive a book with all writing in it. The only time I have annotated inside a book was when I studied English Literature at school and we had to do this during class.
12. When do you find yourself reading? Morning, afternoon, evening, whenever you get the chance or all the time?
I read whenever and wherever I can. I tend to find evening/night is the most suitable for me and is my favourite time to read. I never tend to read in the mornings, I simply do not seem to have time.
13. What is your best setting to read in?
If it is sunny, then outside is my favourite place to read. However, if it is cold and I read inside then I love to devour a book on the sofa all snuggled up with the heating on and a warm cup of tea. Oh, and having my cat or dog around me makes it that much better!
14. What do you do first – Read or Watch?
I always like to read the book before I watch the film/series. I read the Harry Potter series and the Hunger Games series before I watched the films and I was very happy I did that. However, sometimes if I watch something and find out it was based on a book (this happened to me for The Perks of Being a Wallflower), then I will find myself instantly buying the book and reading it.
15. What form do you prefer? Audiobook, E-book or physical book?
I always read physical books. I find it difficult to read off of screens for a prolonged period of time, I find I get headaches and bored. I love the feel of having a book in my hand and the smell of books is divine (I can’t be the only one, surely?)
16. Do you have a unique habit when you read?
I don’t think I have any unique habits when I read.
17. Do book series have to match?
OF COURSE. I really am big on the way my bookshelves look and are organised. If my series did not match I would throw all my money at a bookshop and make sure they did. Help.
Thank for reading this tag post, I’ll see you again in my next post!
